RSNA 2024 Key Takeaways

Kyle Souligne, EI Radiology Product Marketing Director for North America, presents a few takeaways from our recent show.

As I reflect on RSNA 2024, it’s clear to me that we’ve reached an exciting inflection point in radiology. My name is Kyle Souligne, and as the Enterprise Imaging Radiology Product Marketing Director for North America at AGFA HealthCare, I’ve had the privilege of observing how technology is transforming our industry. This year’s conference wasn’t just about showcasing new tools or buzzworthy concepts—it was about diving into how these technologies can truly enhance efficiency and reduce burnout for radiologists, a mission I’m incredibly passionate about.

Generative AI in Reporting: A Transformational Leap

AI has always been a big topic at RSNA, but what struck me this year was the surge in vendors demonstrating generative AI solutions specifically for reporting. It’s not just about identifying anomalies on an image anymore—it’s about creating interactive, narrative-driven reports that save time and provide actionable insights. Our collaboration with Rad AI for reporting is testament to this transformation, as their generative AI solutions help radiologists generate concise and structured reports directly from imaging data, which are a game changer. This kind of technology is emblematic of where we’re headed: using AI not only to speed up processes but also to alleviate the mental fatigue that comes from repetitive, high-volume work.

What’s more, the sheer number of companies in this space shows just how rapidly this field is growing. It’s inspiring to see how innovation is responding to the urgent needs of radiologists facing increasing demands on their time and expertise.

Cloud Computing: Enabling Flexibility and Collaboration

Cloud technology also took center stage at RSNA 2024. We’ve moved past the question of if healthcare can leverage the cloud to how it can be used to streamline collaboration and improve flexibility. I’m especially encouraged by how cloud solutions empower radiologists with remote access to imaging data. This means radiologists can maintain their productivity whether they’re in the office or working from home—a small but meaningful step in addressing burnout and improving work-life balance.

As someone deeply embedded in this space for the last two decades, I’ve seen firsthand how cloud-based systems like AGFA HealthCare’s Enterprise Imaging Cloud platform can make a difference. Enterprise imaging platforms that leverage cloud native capabilities enables seamless collaboration between radiologists, referring physicians, and other stakeholders, ultimately helping patients receive faster, more coordinated care.

Addressing Radiologist Burnout: A Shared Responsibility

At nearly every session I attended, there was talk of burnout. It’s no surprise—the numbers are stark. Nearly all radiology leaders are struggling with staffing shortages and burnout remains an ever-present challenge. What I appreciated most was how this year’s RSNA emphasized the shared responsibility we have as an industry to address these issues. It’s not just about adding technology; it’s about implementing it in ways that make radiologists’ lives easier, not harder.

Hearing RSNA President Curtis Langlotz speak about “intelligent connections” between people and technology deeply resonated with me. It’s a reminder that every innovation we bring forward must center on enhancing the radiologist’s role in patient care—not replacing it.

Looking Ahead with Excitement

As I walked the exhibit halls and listened to thought leaders at RSNA 2024, I couldn’t help but feel a growing excitement about the future of radiology. The pace of innovation is staggering. Generative AI, cloud computing, and other emerging technologies aren’t just concepts anymore—they’re tools we can deploy today to drive real change.

What excites me most is the trajectory we’re on. The conversations have matured, shifting from “What’s possible?” to “How can we implement this effectively?” It’s a level of pragmatism that signals we’re moving closer to the kind of transformation we’ve been striving for—a world where radiologists can focus on what they do best: delivering exceptional patient care.

I left RSNA 2024 feeling inspired and optimistic. The challenges we face as an industry are real, but the solutions are coming fast and with greater precision. I’m proud to be part of this journey, working to ensure that AGFA HealthCare’s innovations continue to make a meaningful impact on the radiology community. I can’t wait to see what the next year brings.
