Osakidetza Basque Country Regional Health Network in Spain reaches key milestone in EI project

Osakidetza Basque Country Regional Health Network, Spain, reaches key milestone in centralized image management project, as several network hospitals complete migration to AGFA HealthCare’s Enterprise Imaging Platform.
AGFA HealthCare is proud to share that several hospitals within the Osakidetza Basque Country healthcare network have successfully transitioned to AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging for Radiology and Molecular Imaging. As part of Osakidetza’s ambitious transformation project, Hospital de Txagorritxu, Hospital de Santiago, Hospital de Alto Deba, Hospital Universitario de Cruces, Hospital San Eloy, Hospital de Urduliz, and Hospital Universitario de Basurto have adopted these advanced imaging solutions.
The implementation of Enterprise Imaging at these hospitals is part of the large-scale project to transition the entire Osakidetza regional healthcare network to a single centralized Enterprise Imaging Platform for medical image management, operating across the Basque Country in Spain. The deployment of Enterprise Imaging began in March 2024, with full roll-out planned for completion in April 2026.
Connecting care across the Osakidetza Basque Country regional health network
The Osakidetza regional healthcare network is made up of 6 main hospitals and 58 additional care centers, which together perform 2.4 million imaging exams per year. The first to implement Enterprise Imaging was Hospital de Txagorritxu, in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Hospital Universitario de Cruces, one of the network’s reference hospitals, was the second major Osakidetza facility to switch to Enterprise Imaging. Its successful go-live was an important step in the project that will see the entire network consolidate from individual AGFA HealthCare systems to a single, centralized Enterprise Imaging platform in April 2026.
“The transformation of the Osakidetza health network’s imaging infrastructure is a large-scale and critical project aimed at enhancing collaboration and access to medical imaging data across the entire Basque region. With seven hospitals already live and seven more scheduled to go live within the coming year, this initiative is rapidly advancing. The hospitals that have transitioned are already seeing major benefits from the central system. Once the entire network is fully integrated with Enterprise Imaging, the centralized VNA will give physicians at all the hospitals seamless access to the entire patient imaging history, including around 30 million legacy studies that are being migrated, from all hospitals in the Basque region,” says Nicolás González López, Head of Technology Service of the Sub-directorate of Computing and Information Systems of Osakidetza.
“We have been a customer of AGFA HealthCare since 2008 and are very pleased with the cooperation and support we received from the AGFA team. Their responsiveness and proactivity ensured that the upgrade from our previous AGFA PACS to Enterprise Imaging went smoothly, marking an important step on our imaging journey. Enterprise Imaging is already speeding up our workflows and giving radiologists and physicians seamless access to the advanced clinical applications they need,” says Estepan Gainza, Chief Radiologist at the Hospital Universitario de Cruces.
“The close collaboration between our team and the Hospital Universitario de Cruces team ensured a smooth and successful transition to Enterprise Imaging. As one of the Osakidetza regional health network reference hospitals, this implementation marks an important step in the creation of a single centralized Enterprise Imaging platform across the region. The project will bring the benefits of Enterprise Imaging to individual hospitals, while faster access to patient imaging history across the network will further support informed diagnosis and treatment decision-making, and improve efficiency and delivery of patient care,” says Miguel Ángel Navarro Romero, Sales Manager for AGFA HealthCare in Iberia.
Towards a unified regional platform
AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging was chosen to provide a unified medical imaging management platform for the Osakidetza regional healthcare network in the Basque Country. The solution is designed to help radiologists, molecular imaging specialists, cardiologists and other clinical users work at the top of their craft and stay fully focused and free from distractions. The seamless integration of advanced clinical applications enables frictionless access to the tools that help improve diagnostic confidence. The platform keeps the entire healthcare ecosystem in flow, enabling healthcare providers to leverage medical imaging across the care continuum. By allowing images and related data to be captured, managed, stored and distributed across the enterprise and region, it eliminates inefficient imaging silos.
In Spain, we are proud to provide more than 80 AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging and PACS installations, supporting a growing number of hospitals and patients.
